Vaccine History - Success or Failure?
By Dr. James Howenstine, MD, 2010.
Cowpox vaccine was believed able to immunize people against smallpox. At the time this vaccine was introduced, there was already a decline in the number of cases of smallpox. Japan introduced compulsory vaccination in 1872. In 1892 there were 165,774 cases of smallpox with 29,979 deaths despite the vaccination program. A stringent compulsory smallpox vaccine program, which prosecuted those refusing the vaccine, was instituted in England in 1867. Within 4 years 97.5% of persons between 2 and 50 had been vaccinated. The following year England experienced the worst smallpox epidemic [1] in its history with 44,840 deaths. Between 1871 and 1880 the incidence of smallpox escalated from 28 to 46 per 100,000. The smallpox vaccine does not work.
Much of the success attributed to vaccination programs may actually have been due to improvement in public health related to water quality and sanitation, less crowded living conditions, better nutrition, and higher standards of living. Typically the incidence of a disease was clearly declining before the vaccine for that disease was introduced. In England the incidence of polio had decreased by 82% before the polio vaccine was introduced in 1956.
In the early 1900s an astute Indiana physician, Dr. W.B. Clarke, stated "Cancer was practically unknown until compulsory vaccination with cowpox vaccine began to be introduced. I have had to deal with two hundred cases of cancer, and I never saw a case of cancer in an unvaccinated [2] person."
There is a widely held belief that vaccines should not be criticized because the public might refuse to take them. This is valid only if the benefits exceed the known risks of the vaccines.
Do Vaccines Actually Prevent Disease?
This important question does not appear to have ever been adequately studied. Vaccines are enormously profitable for drug companies and recent legislation in the U.S. has exempted lawsuits against pharmaceutical firms
in the event of adverse reactions to vaccines which are very common. In 1975 Germany stopped requiring pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination. Today less than 10% of German children are vaccinated against pertussis. The number of cases of pertussis has steadily decreased [3] even though far fewer children are receiving pertussis vaccine.
Measles outbreaks have occurred in schools with vaccination rates over 98% in all parts of the U.S. including areas that had reported no cases of measles for years. As measles immunization rates rise to high levels measles becomes a disease seen only in vaccinated persons. An outbreak of measles occurred in a school where 100% of the children had been vaccinated. Measles mortality rates had declined by 97% in England before measles vaccination was instituted.
In 1986 there were 1300 cases of pertussis in Kansas and 90% of these cases occurred in children who had been adequately vaccinated. Similar vaccine failures have been reported from Nova Scotia where pertussis continues to be occurring despite universal vaccination. Pertussis remains endemic [4] in the Netherlands where for more than 20 years 96% of children have received 3 pertussis shots by age 12 months.
After institution of diptheria vaccination in England and Wales in 1894 the number of deaths from diptheria rose by 20% in the subsequent 15 years. Germany had compulsory vaccination in 1939. The rate of diptheria spiraled to 150,000 cases that year whereas, Norway which did not have compulsory vaccination, had only 50 cases of diptheria the same year.
The continued presence of these infectious diseases in children who have received vaccines proves that life long immunity which follows natural infection does not occur in persons receiving vaccines. The injection process places the viral particles into the blood without providing any clear way to eliminate these foreign substances.
Why Do Vaccines Fail To Protect Against Diseases?
Walene James, author of Immunization: the Reality Behind The Myth, states that the full [5] inflammatory response is necessary to create real immunity. Prior to the introduction of measles and mumps vaccines children got measles and mumps and in the great majority of cases these diseases were benign. Vaccines "trick" the body so it does not mount a complete inflammatory response to the injected virus.
Vaccines and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS
The incidence of Sudden Infant Death syndrome SIDS has grown from .55 per 1000 live births in 1953 to 12.8 per 1000 in 1992 in Olmstead County, Minnesota. The peak incidence for SIDS is age 2 to 4 months the exact time
most vaccines are being given to children. 85% of cases of SIDS occur in the first 6 months of infancy. The increase in SIDS as a percentage of total infant deaths has risen from 2.5 per 1000 in 1953 to 17.9 per 1000 in 1992. This rise in SIDS deaths has occurred during a period when nearly every childhood disease was declining due to improved sanitation and medical progress except SIDS. These deaths from SIDS did increase during a period when the number of vaccines given a child was steadily rising to 36 per child.

CDC Sees Spike in Mumps Outbreak Amongst Vaccinated
Center For Disease Control. February, 2010
(CBS/ AP) The Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta is looking into a mumps outbreak among Orthodox Jews in New York and New Jersey that has now surpassed 1,500 cases and shows no sign of ending soon.
In November, the CDC called the spike in mumps cases, "the largest U.S. mumps outbreak since 2006, when the United States experienced a resurgence of mumps with 6,584 reported cases." Then, only 179 people were sickened in New York and New Jersey.
The outbreak began last summer at a boys camp in the Catskills. Authorities have linked the outbreak to an 11-year-old camper who had just come from Britain where a mumps outbreak had sickened more than 4,000 people.
Since the summer, there have been almost 500 cases reported in Orange Country, N.Y, and more than 300 in neighboring Rockland Country. It also has spread to Lakewood , N.J., where about 150 are affected and to the New York City borough of Brooklyn, where some 50 cases have been reported. Nearly all the cases are in the insular Orthodox Jewish community.
Health officials said most had a mumps vaccination, but the shots are not completely effective.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday said the count has now reached 1,521. Nineteen people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported.
Mumps is a contagious disease caused by a virus, according to the CDC. Initial symptoms appear 12 to 25 days after infection and include fever, headache, muscle aches, loss of appetite and swelling of the jaw and cheeks.
Complications can lead to deafness, painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries, and, rarely, death.
Anger At Doctors' Swine Flu Jab Hard Sell
By Sharon Labi and Rosie Squires
From: The Sunday Telegraph February 07, 2010
DOCTORS have been told to issue the swine flu vaccine throughout summer in order to deplete the Government's stockpile before millions of doses expire.
Australia's chief medical officer Professor Jim Bishop will write to doctors this week urging them to "redouble efforts" to vaccinate as many patients as possible.
But critics say there is no legitimate medical reason to mass vaccinate against a flu that has proved to be far less serious than first feared.
The federal Government is committed to buying 21 million doses of the vaccine from manufacturer CSL, but the take-up rate has been slower than hoped.
GPs admit they are doing opportunistic vaccinations to avoid wasting the vaccine, which comes in multi-dose vials that need to be thrown out after 24 hours. Patients who present with food poisoning or for a routine blood test are leaving with a swine flu jab.
Medical researcher Professor Nikolai Petrovsky said the Government was pushing the vaccine to save face.
"There's no point in overselling it, which maybe they're doing to justify the fact they've wasted maybe $100 million or more on a vaccine they don't need," Dr Petrovsky told The Sunday Telegraph.
"Are they convincing people to have it so they're under less attack in terms of wasting money? That would be a concern because it's not driven by medical imperatives."
Infectious disease expert Professor Peter Collignon questioned the value of mass vaccinations and said there was no point vaccinating in summer except for high-risk groups.
The swine flu vaccine is due to expire this winter but Professor Bishop said the 12 month shelf-life was only technical. The vaccine would be reviewed and could be used on patients for a further year.
This winter's seasonal flu vaccine will protect against swine flu and will be rolled out within weeks. Professor Bishop said swine flu would be the dominant strain this winter. "We're urging (doctors) now that flu season is approaching and maybe approaching faster than usual that this is a good time to redouble efforts and get more out there," he said.
While seven million doses have been distributed, the Government can't say exactly how many Australians have been immunised. Penrith GP and founder of Doctors Action Adrian Sheen said only travellers were requesting the swine flu vaccine. "People will wait till the rollout of the seasonal flu vaccine, so there will be a lot of wastage," Dr Sheen said. "The multi-dose vials haven't helped of course."
Opposition health spokesman Peter Dutton said the vaccination program was a shambles. "It's a clearance sale of vaccines not because it's in people's best interests but because the Government's trying to cover its failed policy," he said.
Australian Medical Association vice-president Dr Steve Hambleton said doctors were pushing the vaccine to avoid a repeat of last winter's hospital admissions. "Opportunistic vaccination is the major push at the moment. If you go to the doctor for anything the doctor will most likely be offering a free swine flu vaccine to add to our pool of immune people," he said. The swine flu vaccine is free to everyone while the seasonal flu jab is free for over 65s and at-risk groups such as asthma sufferers.
H1N1 Flu Is a False Pandemic, Health Expert Claims
Monday, January 11, 2010. www.foxnews.com
A leading health expert said the swine flu scare was a "false pandemic" led by drug companies that stood to make billions from vaccines, The Sun reported Monday.
Wolfgang Wodarg, head of health at the Council of Europe, claimed major firms organized a "campaign of panic" to put pressure on the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic.
He believes it is "one of the greatest medicine scandals of the century," and he has called for an inquiry.
An emergency debate on the issue will be held by the Council of Europe later this month.
The Council of Europe covers 47 European countries and seeks to develop common and democratic principles between the nations.
Wodarg said, "It's just a normal kind of flu. It does not cause a tenth of deaths caused by the classic seasonal flu.
"The great campaign of panic we have seen provided a golden opportunity for representatives from labs who knew they would hit the jackpot in the case of a pandemic being declared.
"We want to clarify everything that brought about this massive operation of disinformation. We want to know who made decisions, on the basis of what evidence, and precisely how the influence of the pharmaceutical industry came to bear on the decision-making."
He added: "A group of people in the WHO is associated very closely with the pharmaceutical industry."
The WHO recently reaffirmed its stance that the pandemic is not over. However, the number of swine flu deaths is dramatically lower than expected.
In an interview with France's L'Humanite Sunday, Wodarg also raised concerns about swine flu vaccines.
"The vaccines were developed too quickly. Some ingredients were insufficiently tested," he said.
"But there is worse to come. The vaccine developed by Novartis was produced in a bioreactor from cancerous cells, a technique that had never been used until now.
"This was not necessary. It has also led to a considerable mismanagement of public money.
"The time has come at last for us to make demands on governments. The purpose of the inquiry is to prevent more false alarms of this type in the future."
"We must make sure people can rely on the analysis and the expertise of national and international public institutions. The latter are now discredited, because millions of people have been vaccinated with products with inherent possible health risks."
